How to Choose a Garage Door Company

Get a written estimate with the work and the price, get the warranty in writing, check that the company has a real local address and reviews, and pay as the work is done. That is what the FTC, the BBB and the Indiana Attorney General advise. The BBB also lists the signs of the garage door scams it hears about most.

Written Estimate

The FTC advises getting more than one written estimate, each listing the work, the materials, the completion date and the price, and asking why bids differ before choosing the lowest. The contract should name the company and set out the payment schedule.

Our estimates come as a link you read and sign on your phone, and the price is set before any work starts.

Warranty in Writing

The FTC advises getting the warranty in writing, with its length, its limits and who honors it: the installer, the distributor or the manufacturer.

Our work carries a 1-year warranty on parts and labor. A new opener also carries its manufacturer warranty.

Indiana Home Improvement Contracts

The Indiana Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division enforces the state Home Improvement Contracts Act, which sets what a written home improvement contract has to include. Ask for the contract before work starts, and ask whether your city or county requires a permit for the job.

Industry Certification

The International Door Association and DASMA run IDEA, an accreditation for door companies and a certification for technicians. Both require a written exam and verified experience, and IDEA keeps a public directory where you can look a company or technician up.

Scam Warning Signs

The BBB reports garage door companies that advertise a very low repair price, then find more work and parts once they are at the house, counting on the door being stuck. Some buy search ads for emergency repair and use names that look like a local company.

The BBB lists five warning signs: a generic business name that is not registered with the state, a demand for full payment before the work is done, no physical address, a very low advertised price followed by demands for more, and pressure to fix the door immediately because it is unsafe.

Where to Check and Complain

Look the company up on BBB.org and read its Google reviews. Complaints about a contractor in Indiana go to the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division. Keep copies of the contract, any changes, the warranty and your messages.
