Garage Door Cable Repair
Two lifting cables carry the door, one each side, running from the bottom bracket up to a drum on the spring shaft. When one snaps or jumps its drum the door lifts on one side only and twists in the track.

Signs a Cable Has Failed
One side hangs lower
One side keeps lifting and the other does not, so the door sits at an angle and binds against the track on the way up.
Slack cable at the drum
Look up at the spring shaft. Loose cable piled around the drum means it has come off rather than broken.
Fraying at the bottom
Cables rust and fray from the bottom end up, nearest the wet floor. Broken strands showing means it is going to part.
What the Repair Involves
Stop running the door
Every cycle from here drags the door further out of square, and bent track or a creased panel is a bigger job than the cable.
Tension released first
The bottom bracket the cable attaches to sits under full spring tension, so the spring gets unwound before anything near it is touched.
Cables replaced as a pair
Both cables are the same age and have done the same number of cycles. We price it both ways.
Drums re-set and the door re-timed
The drums are set so both cables wind the same amount, or the door lifts crooked on new cable. Balanced and run before we leave.

Common Questions
Why did my garage door cable snap?
Usually rust at the bottom end, a drum out of adjustment, or the door running out of balance so one cable carries more than its share. Sometimes the door closed on something, the cable went slack, and it jumped off the drum rather than breaking.
Can I still use the door with one cable broken?
No. Every cycle puts the whole load on one side, which bends track, twists the door and pulls rollers out.
Is a broken cable dangerous?
The bottom bracket it attaches to is under spring tension, and a door hanging on one cable can drop. Leave it down, leave the opener off, and do not park under it.
How much does cable replacement cost?
It depends on the door and on what the failed cable did to the drums and track on its way out. We come out, look at it, and give you the price for free before any work starts.
